- The Marshall Plan offered economic aid to "any country that needed it" to lessen the appeal of communism. The Truman Doctrine was a policy by the US and the West to stop the spread of Communism.
- Cuban Missile Crisis
- The Berlin Wall was a wall that divided Berlin into East and West. Eastern Berlin was Communist and Western Berlin was Democratic.
- Korean War
- A race between the United States and the Soviet Union, where the two countries tried to get to the moon first. The USSR made it to space first, but the United States put a man on the moon first.
- Vietnam War
- A 13-day military standoff between the USSR and Cuba on one side, and the the US on the other. Both sides built and readied nuclear weapons in preparation for nuclear war.
- A 3-year war between North Korea (with help from China and the USSR) and South Korea (with help from the United Nations, mainly the US). It ended when the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed.
- A 20-year war in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia between North Vietnam (with help from China, the USSR, and other Soviet countries) and South Vietnam (with help from the US, South Korea, and other anti-communist countries). The war ended when the Communists seized South Vietnam.
