- Harriet Tubman was born a slave in 1820. After mistreatment and a serious head injury, she made her escape in 1849. She later became one of the most famous conductors of the Underground Railroad.
- The Underground Railroad was the name people called the system of safe-houses on an escape route that fugitive slaves used. The "stations" were usually homes of abolitionists or freed slaves.
- The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 made it difficult for escaped slaves to remain free, even in the northern states. Harriet Tubman made over a dozen trips and led slaves to freedom!
