De periode van de roman is belangrijk, omdat het zich voordoet tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Zodra het Nederlands door Duitsland in 1940 werden aangevallen, hun grondgebied (met inbegrip van Curaçao) waren in gevaar van een aanval. Het is omwille van de Duitse aanvallen op de olieraffinaderijen en tankers die Phillip belandt gestrand op de Cay.
De Cay is gelegen in het Caribisch gebied. Dit deel van de wereld is vol van de vele kleine eilandjes. Hierdoor Phillip en Timothy kunnen een eiland te overleven na de SS Hato zinkt.
Het weer in het Caribisch gebied is tropisch. In eerste instantie, dit maakt het makkelijker voor Phillip en Timothy om te overleven. Ze hoeven niet veel warme kleding en vinden tal van vis en kokosnoten te eten. Maar het klimaat van het Caribisch gebied brengt ook het gevaar van orkanen. Een enorme orkaan doodt Timothy en legt Phillip in groot gevaar.
