Kazi, een goede vriend en al jaren kok van de familie, is als familie voor hen, en ze zijn allemaal respectvol en liefdevol tegenover hun grootmoeder, Dadi.
Toen India werd bevrijd van de Britse overheersing, werd de religie waarin men geloofde hun identiteit. Het verhaal draait om de scheiding van de hindoes, de moslims en de sikhs, en het feit dat Nisha's vader hindoe is en haar moeder moslim.
