Gedurende de roman staat Marlee voor een aantal uitdagingen die ze moet overwinnen. Enkele van deze uitdagingen zijn onder meer haar hoogtevrees, racisme en onrecht om haar heen, haar relatie met haar moeder, het vertrek van Liz, het feit dat Judy niet zo graag bij haar wil zijn, en natuurlijk haar angst om te praten in het bijzijn van mensen die ze weet het niet. Voor deze activiteit maken de leerlingen een spinnenkaart met 3 cellen die 3 van Marlee's uitdagingen illustreert en beschrijft .
