  • As Rome grew, so did the social gap. Many citizens couldn't compete with the rich, so as a result sold their land. Tiberius and Gaius fought for r better conditions of the poor. The senate felt threatened and both brothers met their death. As a result, a civil war began. Generals seized power, and promised the poor land. Eventually, one general became so powerful he took Rome by force. His name was Julius Caesar.

  • Julius Caesar was in a triumvirate, a three way rule ( Pompey and Crassus). Eventually, Caesar conquered Gaul and defeated Pompey's armies. As a result, he was dictator of Rome for life. Caesar had absolute power. He expanded senate and granted citizenship. However, senators thought he was getting too powerful and assassinated him.
  • After Caesar's death, another triumvirate formed. It contained Octavian, Antony, and Lepidus. Octavian forced Lepidus to resign, and Antony left to Egypt. Octavian defeated Antony in Egypt and was leader of Rome. Octavian accepted the title Augustus. Eventually, there was peace. This era was Pax Romana. his death, his government still worked.

  • ABout 90% percent of the people were farmers. Rome had a vast trading network. The Roman network traded from Mesopotamia to China. A road system linked roads all the way to Persia. Most people lived in the countryside. Rome also had slaves. They worked both in the city and countryside. Some slaves became gladiators, others do household things.
  • The earliest Romans valued spirits, and assigned each family with a spirit. Lares were guardian spirits. Rome, politics were linked with religion. Famous Gods were Jupiter, and Minerva. Worship of the emperor was also a "thing".
  • The government provided free games, races, mock battles, and gladiator contest. Gladiators would fight wild animals, and were honored if they won. During the Pax Romana, Christianity was forming.
