  • Illinois College, founded in 1829, was one of the first institutions of higher learning chartered in Illinois. Before the Civil War, Illinois College was a center for the antislavery movement in the state. 
  • Theodore Roosevelt Island  
  • In 1850  Mary Shadd and her brother Isaac emigrated from the United States to Canada along with scores of other African Americans who believed Canada offered better and greater opportunities. 
  • Boston, Massachusetts
  • Florida, is a precursor site to the Underground Railroad, demonstrating that resistance to slavery arose decades before abolitionism became organized and very influenced .

  • The Potomac River flows into two channels surrounding the island. It is the site of both a camp for displaced person from slavery and Camp Greene, a camp for African American troops partly recruited from freedom seekers.
  • Lewis Hayden (1811-1889), an escaped Kentucky slave, settled in Boston with his wife Harriet in 1849 and became active in the abolition movement. 
  • Built in 1793, is significant for its role in the Underground Railroad
