  • A common theme in dystopian novels is individuality being looked at as a bad thing. In this scene, Montag is talking to Mildred about how Beatty and the other fireman are scared of Clarisse and other people like her. Clarisse is one of the few people in their society that is different and is not conforming to the ways of the government. This causes the fireman who keep the control to worry about her rebelling or her changing the views of others. All of the other citizens are the same so she sticks out like a sore thumb.  Bradbury created this element by making one individual different who the government is afraid of.

  • In dystopian novels, the author will often times make an illusion that the government is perfect when really it is tearing itself apart. In this scene Captain Beatty is talking about how amazing this society is and how it has helped them grow since the "Dark Ages" of books. He says how they have created a government where all men are equal so they aren't competing against each other which to them is a bad thing. This element is created by making many citizens, such as Mildred, believe that they live in the best society when really it isn't.

  • Often time in the dystopian genre, the government will dehumanize its inhabitants so they don't feel as bad about torturing, or conforming them into what they want. In this part of the book, Mildred has two friends over for dinner. Mrs. Phelps , is talking about how her husband is off at war and the possibility that he might die really isn't worrying her. Her husband told her that if he dies not to think about him and just go get married. There is no real love in this society which is a thing humans encounter everyday. This element is created by taking away all feelings of love or passion away from the people by emitting media into their lives.
