Cassie gets angry at the Barnett Mercantile because Mr. Barnett is making his white customers a priority. She didn't understand that during the time period, black people were considered less important than white people. After the outburst Big Ma teaches Cassie that, that's just the way of life.
The Wallaces let Uncle Hammer go in front of them on the bridge because they thought that he was Mr. Granger. When they find out that it was actually Uncle Hammer they are shocked and confused. Mama started to worry because she knew that the Wallaces would get angry. She tells Uncle Hammer that he shouldn't have done that because one day the family will pay. (foreshadowing)
Papa explains to Stacey why he and Jeremy can't be friends. He explains that Jeremy might be kind and treat them equally now, but later on in life, Jeremy is going to think of himself as a man, and Stacey as a boy. Stacey tries to protest and tell Papa that Jeremy wouldn't do that, but Papa doesn't listen.
