Augustus takes Hazel to a picnic where he tells her that he entered them in a foundation to grant cancer children's wishes. They chose Hazel and Augustus and they will take them to Amsterdam to meet the author. Hazel feels sad because she doesn't want to hurt Augustus when she dies.
Hazel's lungs fill and she must go to the hospital. She learns Augustus stayed in the hospital waiting room all the days she was there. Her parents are afraid that she is too sick to travel to Amsterdam, but her doctor convinces her parents that she needs to live out her life.
Van Houten reveals to Hazel that he wrote his famous book about his daughter who died of cancer. He says it was the only way to resolve all of his pain.

The novel ends with Hazel reading the eulogy that Augustus wrote for her before he passed.
Getting hurt in this world is inexorable, but we do get to choose who we allow to hurt us
