- When Mrs. Hutcherson rushed to the square and ran through crowds being unready it showed that something is supposed to happen sooner or later. She is supposedly needed to be somewhere and she forgot about it. Also, she forgot what day it was. As Mrs. Hutcherson said in the text, "and then I looked out the window and the kids was gone, and then I remembered it was the twenty-seventh and came a-running". She wasn't too late but it shows that she is attending something important.
- Throwing rocks at Tessie
- The mystery shown is the confusion and curiosity of the people in the building getting names called for the lottery. They were all hesitant and scared on who was going to get called on the paper out of the black box. The text says that everyone holding the papers were holding them nervously. "The crowd was quiet. A girl whispered, "I hope it's not Nancy," and the sound of the whisper reached the edges of the crowd". This shows that nobody knows who isn't going to be and the situation is leaving things mysterious.
- The surprise was when everyone turned their cards around and found out that they were blank. When they found out it was blank everyone already knew it was Tessie because she was the last one who hadn't flipped her card. Now they have to throw stones at her. In the text is says, "Tessie, Mr. Summers said. There was a pause, and then Mr. Summers looked at Bill Hutchinson, and Bill unfolded his paper and showed it. It was blank. It's Tessie,". That is the main surprise that Tessie is the on that was chosen out of everybody else.
- After finding out that Tessie was chosen, she now has to be killed with rocks. They were using the stones from earlier in the story from the boys creating piles with them. They all gather her in clear space with stones and start throwing at her to get it over with. Tessie lays her hands out to show how desperate she is to survive. She says, "This isn't fair" as stated in the text because she feels like she shouldn't die because of what a paper says.
