- in the early 1900's on a southern farm a new baby is born in the family of the narrator. He is born with many disabilities both mental and physical.
- Climax
- The Narrator has a hard time accepting his brother because he wishes he was normal and he is embarrassed to have a brother with disability.
- falling action
- The narrator is forced to take doodle around with him so he decides hes going to teach him how to walk. once he is successful he thinks he can do anything. Doodle sees a scarlet ibis die and empathizes with him. The narrator decides to start a new plan with doodle but it is too much for Doodle
- Resolution
- Pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death
- The narrator runs off without Doodle and when he returns he finds him on his face in a pool of blood
- The narrator cries over Dooodle and compares him to the scarlet Ibis
- The narrator then decides to retell this story and admits that his pride is was the cause of Doodles death
