Storyboard Text

  • Living in a free nation under oppression is difficult . Life under an unfair system is living in bondage and fear.
  • Although she feeds me bread of bitterness, And sinks into my throat her tiger's tooth...
  • Stealing my breath of life, I will confess I love this cultured hell that tests my youth.
  • We shall overcome... someday!
  • IMAGERYThe structure creates a rhyme scheme of abab cdcd efef gg. Each four-line quatrain is unified in its topic. An example is found in the rhyming words in the second and fourth lines, the words tooth (2nd line) and youth (4th line). The rhyming pattern grabs the reader's eye and allows him to picture the activity that is being described. The rhythm in the poem makes it easy to grasp and hold on, as the picture's description is being clarified.
  • The Turn is located on line 8 in the poem. The author is describing the abuse the he is suffering. He comments that the "she" in the poem is feeding him bread of bitterness, she is drawing the life out of him having her teeth in his neck. She has stolen his life but he loves her still and values the adversity that he is going through because it is giving him the strength to endure. After the Turn he comments that in spite of all that has come against him, he stands firm within her walls comparing it to a rebel standing before a king.In admiration of her grandness he stands, but she does not realize his true value as he sinks beneath the sand. The tone moves from one of sadness to one of pity due to her, (America) inability to recognize the treasure standing before her.
  • I am optimistic about the future!
  • I stand within her walls with not a shred of terror, malice, not a word of jeer, Darkly i gaze into the days ahead, And see her might and granite wonders there,
  • Beneath the touch of Time's unerring hand, Like priceless treasure sinking in the sand.
  • One day she will see my value!
