Hi! My name is Emma Smith. I am from England and I live with my mother, father, and brother. My family is extremely poor and it is my dream to go to America. In England, I cannot receive an education or have freedom of religion. This is a big problem for me because I want to have an education and make something of myself.
I chose to come to the colonies to have a better life and earn a salary. When I made the lengthy journey to America I missed my family more than ever and I just wanted to see them again. The boat was extremely crowded and on this trip I learned that I get seasick, VERY easily. I am traveling to the colony of Maryland to become an indentured servant. I hope and pray that all of my dreams come true in Maryland.
I decided to go to Maryland because the weather is much warmer there, because of this they grow crops year round. That means I'll always have work to do. Now that I am in Maryland, I work for a family of 6 and I live on their land. They are extremely good to me and provide me food, clothing, and I am paid a salary.
Even though I miss my family very much, my life in Maryland is better than it would've ever been in England. After I serve my years being an indentured servant, there are so many more possibilities then there would have ever been in England.
My daily life in Maryland is very interesting. I wake up, clean the house, start making breakfast for the children, go out to the fields and harvest the crops. When all of that is finished, I go into town to buy anything we don't have at the house. That is when I get to really see what life is like in Maryland.
It was definitely worth it to make the long and difficult journey to Maryland. In Maryland I have done things that I could never dream of doing in England. Now I have freedom of religion and I can receive an education.
