- Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
- Pathos
- We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their selfhood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating “For Whites Only”.
- Logos

- But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity.
- Martin talks about the founding fathers, specifically Abraham Lincoln. This is example ethos because he is using someone significant to persuade you.

- He says hundreds of people to emphasize the number of people and time.

- America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked “insufficient funds.”
- Martin uses ethos in using the constitution and the Declaration of independence to persuade you.
- This is telling people to do something about the situation and also he relates to religion when he talks about gods children.
- This shows logos because he is informing the audience on information about society.
