Cassie experiences racism for the first time to the point where Mr. Simms has to force Cassie to apologize and respect Miz Lillian Jean. Cassie doesn't fully understand that white people can always do whatever they want to black people. Cassie doesn't understand that in this time period, people only value White's more then African Americans. Big Ma wants to to say sorry so she doesn't get hurt or getting in big trouble for 'disrespecting' white people.
Mama explains racism to Cassie to make her understand the prison world that they live in, being forced to respect others even if they treat you horrible and that they don't respect you back. She also talks about slavery and how people still hold on in life because they had little to hold to and they were able to hold on to those things. Also no matter what color you are, rich or poor, we always have a choice on how to make our lives out of it.
Papa is talking about how you can be friends with anyone but don't expect the friendship to last forever because the more older you get, the more you grow apart, especially if they are a different race. Jeremy might think he is a man in a few years and he might treat Stacey like a boy to him. And Jeremy wants to turn on Stacey, he'll do it. Papa tells Stacey this to make Stacey understand that right now, this country is not build for friendships between black and white people.
