- Peter the Australian navel officer is living his normal life by getting milk for his wife and daughter early in the morning but is also excited to get his first navel assignment since the war ended
- Peter gets assigned to a special assignment with a crew from the U.S. These were the men that survived the war and ended up in Australia because of the leader ship of their captain named Dwight.Their mission is to go explore areas that have already been affected by the radiation and get readings of the radiation levels
- Peter invites Dwight to stay with him and his wife for the night so Dwight doesn't feel alone until its time to begin the assignment. Peter and his wife decide to have a party to distract Dwight from all that he has been through. They also invite a close friend Moira to help with the distraction and they get along very well.
- The time comes for the big assignment the goal was for the crew to go out and explore areas to find any form of life and to see if the radiation levels have decreased but they discover that there is no life and the radiation has not gone down at all and that they are hopeless.
- Everyone realizes that its all about to end and everyone try to do what they have wanted to do in life and try to enjoy the remainder of the time they have left before they all die of radiation
- The time has come and the radiation has arrived everyone starts to die. Peter and Mary put their child down and later both take the pills and pass away. Dwight goes on his last voyage and sinks the ship with him still in it and Moira watches him do it from a cliff and takes the pill with her last shot of brandy.
