Storyboard Text

  • tariff debate
  • This tariff will make more Americans buy my manufactured products.
  • It would make me, other northerners and wealthy. Alsp making the whole country
  • southern states
  • We do not manufacture in the south, we farm.
  • The south will not benefit from this, only the north will.
  • Calhoun
  • This law is an example of an unconstitutional law. Because of this we should give the states the right to nullify any law, giving them the power to decide whether or not the law is constitutional.
  • The northern states wanted to have a tariff on imported goods. It motivated people to buy american goods and kept people from buying European imports.
  • federal union
  • I do not agree with Calhoun, this would give the states too much power. We need to preserve the federal union.
  • The southern states did not want to have a tariff because they could not produce their own goods and only could get resources from imports.
  • compromise
  • We will lower the tariff to make it more fair for the south.
  • Because the southern states had such a strong opposition towards this tariff vice president Calhoun wanted to give the states the right to nullify a federal law. this would let the states decide whether or not a law was constitutional.
  • The nulification law.
  • Lets have pass a law allowing us to nullify laws.
  • President Jackson opposed giving states this right and wanted to preserve the federal union. Jackson's opposition toward this matter was strange because he supported a strong state government.
  • But don't you support strong state governments and believe that the government is too strong?
  • Congress decided to lower the tariff to make the south happy but this still diod not please them.
  • that is still unfair we need still do not want this tariff!
  • The south passes the nullification law, refusing to pay "illegal tariffs" This put an end to the debating and fighting over tariffs.
  • Than we could nullify any unconstitutional law passed.
