Esperanza talks about her Mom's hair. She says that it "is the warm smell of bread before you bake it" (Cisneros 6). She says that her hair smells like bread, even though it probably doesn't. She means that it is a comforting smell.
Ezperanza describes herself as "a red balloon, a balloon tied to an anchor"(Cisneros 9). She means that she can't feel free until she has a best friend, someone to share her thoughs and feelings with.
Ezperanza calls her great grandmother "a wild horse of a woman"(Cisneros 11). She means that she is strong and independent. Her great grandma would never have to depend on another, like a wild horse.
