  • 1589
  • How could this happen!?
  • The natives have arrived! Get out of here!
  • 1589
  • Shhh...It's fine, they won't find us as long as we're quiet!
  • 1589
  • CROATOAN
  • Liesel!
  • Don't stop running! Not yet!
  • LIESEL: The natives arrived and people tried to flee, but we were unprepared and we didn't have any weapons so they killed many of the families. I think some people managed to escape, but they didn't stay long enough for us to find out where they were going. We were left alone.
  • Present Day
  • It's not fair! They can't do this! We're just children and our parents are good people!
  • Now hold your horses! How can any of this be proven? It sounds like nonsense to me! The native tribe just massacred the entire colony but left no trace of their work? What, did they do some kind of amazing cleaning job?
  • LIESEL: Eventually, they did find us and we ran. The word "CROATOAN" was scratched into a tree and I thought it was done by the tribe who attacked us. But my brother explained that it was a different tribe, and we would find a safe haven there.
  • 1589
  • We're safe for now. But what do we do? Where do we go?
  • I finally found them!
  • LIESEL: Unfortunately, we were separated in the woods and we didn't know how to find our way back, or where to find the Croatoans.
  • Present Day
  • Will you let me go to bed now?
  • ELISA: However, the Croatoans were a small tribe and we know they didn't accommodate all the English. This means the rest of the Roanoke must have gone in another direction, and a surprise attack by a native tribe could easily make them scatter. Humans like to stick together, so an attack is really the only thing that would drive the families apart.
  • Well, actually most people got away and the word CROATOAN as well as European artifacts found in the tribe's location indicate that some of the Roanoke really did find a safe haven there and intermarried with the natives.
  • LIESEL: We made it to a river, one that we were completely unfamiliar with. Was this where the adults got water? It seems awfully far away... Will we ever see mummy and daddy again?
  • ELISA: It was not the Roanoke who carved the tribe's name there, but a native who was willing to help the colony and knew about the plot to attack the Roanoke.KAREN: So you mean to say that someone from the attacking tribe was against the leader's plan and decided to help the English?
  • Are you kidding, this is just getting interesting! But I have a question: how did the Roanoke have time to carve CROATOAN into wood when a surprise attack hit them and they had to flee?
