The narrator says he is not crazy and he is also confused about why someone might say he is mad. Then, the he starts telling a story of what he did to an old man.
The problem with the narrator is he wants to kill the old man because of his vulture eye and it makes the narrator blood go cold. Also, the narrator is afraid that the neighbor might suspect him killing the old man.
For seven nights every time at midnight at twelve o' clock the narrator slowly opens the door of the old mans bed room while holding a light with a cloth over it and he watches the old man sleep.
But the eighth night he was very careful. He opens the door but the clock moves faster than his hand, and the old man moves in his bed. Since it was too dark for the old man to see the narrator opens the door as quick as he can.
The old man cried with fear, so the narrator stays still for an hour. Then, he kill the old man by strangling him in his covers. After that he cuts the old man's head, arms, and legs not a single drop of blood.

The narrator told them it was him crying in his sleep and that the old man has gone to visit a friend in the country .
