  • James Marshall found gold near Sutters mill in 1848
  • James Marshall told John Sutter about the gold
  • Word soon got out about the gold and people (The Forty Niners) rushed into towns and they were called BoomTowns, and some store owners became rich by selling gold prospectors their supplies needed
  • Some people would pan for gold and some will find gold and some will not
  • Towns that were abandoned when the gold was gone were called Ghost towns
  • Around 250,000 people moved to California during the gold rush
