  • Nationalism Surfaces in India
  • India was called the "Jewel in the crown", because it was Britain' largest supplier of raw materials and it's market for finished goods. Britain's policies forced India to produce for them and to buy from them. The railroad network made India even more valuable.
  • In 1857, 85 sepoys were jailed for refusing to work with the army, and om May 10 the sepoys rebelled and captured the city of Delhi. As a result the British government took direct control over India, and sepoy mutiny created racist attitudes of British and increased distrust between them.
  • India began demanding self-rule and moderation. They resented a system that made them second-class citizens in their own country, and banned from the top posts in the government. They also got paid less than Europeans with the same job.
