Mathilde was tired of her plain, poor life. She dreamed of luxurious things and a beautiful home.
HOW AM I GOING TO GO TO A BALL WHEN I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO WEAR?
One day, her husband came home with wonderful news: she had been invited to a ball! But she didn't take the news as well as he thought she would.
Mathidle's husband gave her 400 francs so she could go buy a dress, and then she went to her friend Madame Forestier and borrowed a beautiful diamond necklace.
I must be introduced!
Once Mathilde got to the ball, she loved all of the attention she received. She was devastated when it was over because she had to go home, but when she got home, the necklace was gone!
I might leave you for her. Sorry
They looked all over town, but the necklace was nowhere to be found. Liosel had to borrow thirty-six thousand francs to afford replace the necklace.
Ten years later, Mme. Liosel spotted her old friend, Mme. Forestier, looking young and beautiful, but Mme. Liosel looked quite the opposite. Mathilde blamed her friend for the hard work and labor she had to endure to pay off the necklace, when Jeanne admitted that the necklace was a fake.
"Oh, my poor Mathilde. But mine was only paste. Why, at most it was worth only five hundred francs!"
