- Torak woke from a sleep that he knew he shouldn't have had. As the past events slowly returned to him, Torak was filled with fear. Where was it? Had it come back? Was it out there, watching his every move? Then he remembered Fa and how he was attacked by the bear. Was he going to be alright?
- Oh no, I wasn't supposed to fall asleep!
- Uhhhh...
- Fa, it's me. How do you feel?
- Torak-leave. Now. Before it comes back.
- No, I can't.
- Torak-I'm dying. I'll be dead by sunrise.
- But, Fa...
- Give me what I need for the Death Journey.
- No, not the death journey.
- Food. The dried meat, take it all.
- Torak was only twelve summers old. He needed Fa. He couldn't survive on his own, he didn't know how. Torak tried not to picture himself alone in the Forest.
- Torak, move! Take my knife and swap it with yours.
- Not your knife, you'll need it!
- You'll need it more, and it'll be nice to have something of yours on the Death Journey.
- In the forest, a twig snapped. Everything looked like a bear. Everything was dark. There was no sound. The Forest was holding its breath. The bear wasn't there yet, but it would come to kill Fa.
- I'm not leaving without you. I'll fight the bear. I-
- No! No one can fight this bear. It is possessed. Some demon from the Otherworld has entered it and made it evil.
- Torak, I need you to swear something.
- Anthing.
- Head north. Many day walks. Find-the Mountain-of the World Spirit.
- What?
- Find it. It's the only hope.
- But, it's never been found. No one can find it!
- You can. Your guide-will find you
- None of this makes sense. What guide? Why must I find the Mountain?
- There's so much I didn't tell you. I-I thought I had more time. Don't hate me for that later.
- I can't do this without you maybe I should-
- No! It-it's too late. And besides, I've kept you away from people-even from your own Wolf Clan. If they find out what you can do...
- What do you mean? I-
- No time! Now swear, on my knife that you will find the Mountain-or die trying.
- I swear, by my blood on this blade, and by each of my three souls-that I will find the Mountain. Or die trying.
- Torak put the death marks on his father, and lastly he put the most important mark of all; a circle on the forehead to mark the Nanuk, the world soul. When he finished he noticed that the pulse in Fa's throat was fainter. He refused to leave Fa, but Fa had made him swear an oath. His father asked him to take his things, get water, and leave!
