- Jessie and his family live together. One day while Jessie's mom is making a fancy dress for a lady, she runs out of candles. She asks Jessie to go get some more candles from his Aunt.

- Jessie is kidnapped by a ship crew and gets taken aboard the ship.

- The ship enters a storm and the ship gets wrecked

- While on the ship Jessie made a new friend. Ras. Ras is one of the slaves on the ship. Jessie and ras find together an island. They find a shack with an old man living there. He gives them food and water.
- Some men come and take Ras back to Africa.
- Jessie comes home and his mom and his little sister are overjoyed to see him home at last.
