The rivalry between the York's and the Lancaster's started when king Richard II was overthrown by his cousin, Henry Bolingbroke, Duke of Lancaster, in 1399
the battle was won by the Lancastrians. Their leader Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, by his victory became the first English monarch of the Tudor dynasty
Henry Vll married Elizabeth of York. This marriage united the two families.
