Western Europe After Rome Falls
No one living in Europe from the fifth to fifteenth century thought of themselves as living in the "middle age". The Middle Ages began as soon as Rome fell.
When Rome fell, they formed new kingdoms that were based on the political development in the Middle Ages.
However, Rome and it's culture didn't disappear overnight, for example the Roman Theatres.
It took centuries for Germanic peoples to migrate into Europe and change it.
This was the slow bending transformation of Roman civilization, Germanic culture, and Christianity. This was part of the larger Mediterranean-wide period called "Late Antiquity".
