- Heyyy everyone today I'm gonna tell you all about hydrothermal vents.
- First I'll start you off with background information. In the early 1960's marine geologist believed that the amount of heat coming from the sea floor would be hooter in areas where hot magma erupted the ocean. This is where they believed mid ocean ridges sea floor spreading occured. In 1977 scientist first discovered hydrothermal vents around Galapagos Island.
- The pressure at the hydrothermalvents increase with every 10 meters that you dive. It increases by one atmosphere.
- Hydrothermal vent temperatures can reach to 750 farhenihet or more. Hydrothermal vents form in highly volcanically sessions, causing magma to ride to the surface once the tectonic plates spread apart.
- Hydrothermal vents depths can vary. From the Galapagos ridge it can range from 2000 meters to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 7,700 meters.
- Chemosynthesi, many of you have probably never heard of it. This is the process of organic compounds by bacteria or other living organisms using energy from typically from the lack of sunlight. This is important to know be that the sun is the root of life so how could living things live so far under water.
- Now that I got all the background information out the way. I'm gonna tell you about all the oraganisms that live in this region. Most organisms that live in this region are heat tolerant meaning that they're the only organisms that can stand the hottness on the vent. These organisms rang from octopus,shrimp,crab,fish and etc. All having the diet of eating on smaller fish.
- Black smokers are the most common type. They release black colored water. Iron and sulfur release cause the black smoker its color. In the end it is combined as iron monosulfide that has the black color creating the black chimmneys. White smokers release a white color and contain barium,calcium,and silicon.
