- The setting in the beginning of the story is mostly at Janie's grandmother house, who lived in a small and poor cabin.
- "Naw, Ah ain’t no young gal no mo’ but den Ah ain’t no old woman neither. Ah reckon Ah looks mah age too. But Ah’m uh woman every inch of me, and Ah know it.
- After Janie married Logan Killicks the setting changes to a farm house where there is a lot of work to do.
- "So de white man throw down de load and tell de nigger man tuh pick it up. He pick it up because he have to, but he don’t tote it. He hand it to his womenfolks. De nigger woman is de mule ud de world so fur as Ah can see."
- After Janie moved on from Logan and married Jody Starks which becomes the major of Eatonville, where Janie is in charge of the town store
- …but Ah’m uh man even if Ah is de Mayor. But de mayor’s wife is somethin’ different again. Anyhow they’s liable tuh need me tuh say uh few words over de carcass, dis bein’ uh special case. But you ain’t goin’ off in all dat mess uh commonness."
- After Jody died and Janie established a relationship with Tea Cake they moved down to a little house to the everglades to start a new work life.
- "You don’t have tuh say, if it wuzn’t fuh me, baby, cause Ah’m heah, and then Ah want yuh tuh know it’s uh man heah."
- Janie Crawford: Janie is the heroine, narrator, tour guide, and all-around hero. She's the lens through which we see the world of turn-of-the-20th-century Florida.
- Granny Crawford: Nanny’s experience as a slave stamped her worldview with a strong concern for financial security, respectability, and upward mobility.
- Joe Starks: often called Jody, is Janie’s second husband and a born entrepreneur with a few good qualities. For one thing, he has magnetic charisma.(very self centered and high self esteem
- Tea Cake: He wins Janie’s heart with his carefree, fun-loving nature. She adores his energy and willingness to make her his equal. He is Janie's last lover.
- conflict 1: Granny's opinion on Logan Hillicks influenced Janie to marry him even tho she didn't love him.
- Conflict 2: Jody's success and vision infuenced Janie to scape with him and leave her marriage with Logan behind
- conflict 3: Jody starks was getting sick which influenced him to believe that Janie was doing Witchcraft on him. He died shortly after this.
- conflict 4: Tea Cake's influence in the town affected Janie's profile during her trial for shooting Tea cake
- Janie and Tea Cake are running from the flood which is coming behind them
- The strong currents took Janie and it was hard for her to get back to dry land.
- while Janie was being moved by the current she spotted a cow with a dog on top, it was her only option since she couldn't get to land. but when things couldn't get any worse she noticed the dog was really aggressive.
- The agressive dog was heading to kill Janie but Tea cake jumped in the water and stabbed the dog to death right before it got to Janie, Tea cake got bitten in the face during his struggles with the dog
