  • Early Life
  • My name is Devanampriya Priyadarshi Samart Ashoka!
  • While He Ruled
  • Yay!!! I am finally king
  • While He Ruled
  • Attack!!!
  • Ashoka was born in 304 B.C. in Pataliputra. His full name was Devanampriya Priyadarshi Samart Ashoka and he was the grandson of the founder of the Mauryan Dynasty. Since he was born into a royal family he was excellent at fighting and hunting and received special training. He was so good he was even able to kill a lion with only a wooden rod!
  • Greatest Achievements
  • I need 84,000 stupas built now!!!!
  • Ashoka first ascendant the throne in 272 BC after his father died but had to wait four years to become the third ruler of the Mauryan Empire. During his first eight years of rule Ashoka was constantly at war. He expanded his empire across much of the India subcontinent, Iran, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Burmese. Ashoka had once believed, "no society can prosper if it aims at making thing easier-instead it should aim at making people stronger."
  • Greatest Achievements
  • While Ashoka ruled he fought a major battle in Kalinga in 261 BC that left 100,000 soldiers and civilians dead and 150,000 deported. Ashoka was successful at conquering Kalinga but once he saw the massive destruction he realized what a mistake he had made and vowed never to fight again. Ashoka was later influenced by Buddhist teachings and made it his state's religion.
  • Life Lesson
  • I made a really bad mistake
  • Some of Ashoka's greatest achievements are when he was said to have built 84,000 stupas to store the relics of Buddha and also as places of meditation. Ashoka also had his wheel of righteousness inscribed on many relics of the Mauryan Empire and was adopted into the Indian flag.
  • On it sir
  • Ashoka had lots of achievements and one of them is the Lion Capital which is a sculpture of four lions standing back to back on top of the Ashoka pillar. The Lion Capital is also the national emblem of India. Another achievement that Ashoka had was that he oversaw the construction of viharas or intellectual hubs.
  • A life lesson I can learn from Ashoka is that we can learn from our own mistakes. Ashoka first wanted to fight wars to expand his empire but then realized that he had made a mistake because that was not what Buddism was all about and then he vowed that he would never do it again. Ashoka had learned from his mistake and I think we can too.
  • But I can learn from it right?!
