Rising Action: Pudge encounters his first "prank". While he was sleeping a group of students tied him up and threw him into the lake. He was able to escape but when he asked The Colonel, he says that it happens to everyone on their first day but when he said they tied him up he knew something was wrong and that it was going to be a long year.
Pudge gets kicked out of class for looking out the window or "daydreaming" and is admonished by his teacher, Dr.Hyde, for not being present at the moment.
After returning from Christmas break the group plans their "pre-prank" called Barn Night. They set off a bunch of fireworks to lead the "Eagle" off campus. During the prank Alaska seems upset about something and tells them to keep setting off the firework and she drives away in her car.
The following morning they receive devastating news that Alaska had died in a car accident. Pudge and The Colonel instantly start going into investigation and find out that it was the day after her mother's death she was feeling responsible for her mother's death and distraught by the idea of having forgotten the day. she was attempting to drive to the gravesite. Alaska's death was unclear if it was an accident or suicide.
In the end, Pudge was at peace with Alaska's death knowing he will never fully understand her but her memory will continue in the people she influenced.
