  • The Old Regime
  • Meeting on the Estates General
  • Tennis Court Oath
  • It was the political and social system in France. The Regime had three orders/estates, the clergy, nobility, and the rest of the population (the Third Estate) included every French citizen who did not possess a noble title and was not ordained by the church. Also there was no national citizenship. Everyone was a subject of the king of France as well as a member of an estate and province The third estate felt treated unfair and wanted justice because they were the only ones who had to pay the taxes. France had a bad king, poor harvest, bad leadership and an enlightenment idea → revolution
  • Storming of the Bastille
  • The Estates General is the general assembly representing the French estates of the realm. King Louis XVI called all three estates to this meeting, because of France financial problems. He wanted to propose solutions to his government's. Each estate had the same representation and one vote. Inevitably, the Third Estate’s vote was over voted by the combined votes of the clergy and nobility. The third estate asked for a double representation. 1788 the double representation was granted.
  • March on Versailles
  • The third estate realized that they would be outvoted by the two other orders. The clergy and the nobility formed a National Assembly. The third estate was locked out on of the assembly. So they moved to a nearby indoor tennis court, where they took an oath never to separate until a written constitution had been established for France. So the Tennis Court Oath was a pledge signed by the members of the third estate. King Louis XVI relented and ordered the clergy and the nobility to join with the Third Estate in the National Assembly.
  • Reign of Terror
  • The Bastille represented royal authority in the centre of Paris it was a prison that was a symbol of the King's absolute and arbitrary power. The storming of the Bastille was in the morning of July 14th 1789. A group of craftsmen and salesmen decided to fight back they ran in to steal some weapons. The mob decided to attack the Bastille too. They started a revolution in order to get some weapons and the gunpowder, which was in there.
  • A crowd of woman marched on October 4th 1789 in the Palace of Versailles, because they wanted bread for their families because of the high price and scarcity of bread. The King agreed to meet with some of the women and promised to distribute all the bread in Versailles to the crowd. It was one of the earliest and most significant events of the French Revolution and it is also known as the October Days.
  • The Reign Terror began after the Death of King Louis XVI in 1793. Robespierre was the mastermind of the Reign of Terror he was the most powerful man in France because he was also the leader of the Committee of Public Safety, the executive committee of the National Convention. The period of his rule became the Reign of Terror. More than 40.000 people were executed during this time. The death ranged in tens of thousands executed by the guillotine for treason. It was a period of the French Revolution characterized by a wave of executions of presumed enemies of the state.
