A tradition to die for.
Tessie chose to be late for the lottery. When she arrived, she acted as if it wasn't a big deal. This foreshadows her being the "winner" later on.
At the beginning of the story, we assume the kids are playing with the stones, but really they are gathering the stones that eventually kill Tessie.
Old traditions die hard.Don't always listen to a tradition when you know it is wrong.
The black dot on the paper is a symbol of death that shows you will die the day you get it.
Tessie's family and close friends were okay with being the ones who end her life.
