- Exposition
- The setting is in a Southern US state, on a farm/ plantation and Old Woman Swamp. The characters are Doodle, the narrator (Doodle's brother), and mom and dad.
- Conflict
- Doodle (the narrator's little brother) was born with difficult challenges in his life and wasn't able to do many things so the narrator didn't accept him how Doodle was born
- Is my brother going to be mentally challenged
- Rising Action
- Doodle now knows how to walk and the narrator is convinced he can teach other stuff to doodle. One day Doodle saw a scarlet ibis while eating dinner the bird was injured and not ok. Once the scarlet ibis hit the ground and died Doodle developed a connection between the bird and him.
- Climax
- "Let's go Doodle."
- The narrator goes back to look for his brother as the storm gets stronger but finds his brother under a red nightshade with his knees up and his face in his arms
- Falling Action
- "Doodle! Doodle!"
- The narrator realizes Doodle died and huddles over him to protect him from the storm. He notices Doodle is like the scarlet ibis when it fell out of the tree. A long broken neck and feet inward
- Resolution
- My pride killed my brother
- The narrator recalls what killed Doodle: "pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death
