World War I, also known as the Great War, was a global conflict that included most of Europe along with parts of Asia, the Middle East, and the United States. As tensions had been brewing throughout Europe in the early parts of the 20th century, the spark that ignited World War I was lit in Bosnia with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.   • Gavrilo Princip was a Serbian nationalist who changed the course of history. He was a member of the secret military society the Black Hand. On June 28th, 1914 he assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This set off a chain of events that led to the outbreak of WWI.
  • Woodrow Wilson was the 28th President of the U.S. Wilson served throughout World War I. He urged Congress to declare war in 1917, following German aggression towards U.S. Naval ships. Wilson was also noted for his 14 Point Plan, which proposed a planned peace to end the War.
  • Arthur Zimmerman was the German State Secretary for Foreign Affairs during WWI. Zimmerman’s infamous telegram, intended for Mexico, was intercepted by the U.S. It proposed a Mexican-German alliance, and helped swing the American public to enter into WWI.
