  • life in the navy was very difficult and there was very harsh discipline and poor conditions. some sailors  learnt about socialism and didn't like how officers controlled every aspect of their lives
  • On June 14th 1905 the Potemkin's cook reported that the meat that was supposed to be given to the crew were full of maggots. the ships doctor inspected it and said it was ok to eat. then when a lot of people didn't want to eat it and had complaints they were threatened to be shot if they didn't eat. then they shot Grigory Vakulinchuk a man who refused to eat who died shortly afterwards
  • this caused a mutiny to take place and sailors grabbed the officers threw them in the water and killed them the boat was controlled by a peoples committee with Matyushenko as their chairperson.
  • they sailed the boat to the ports of odessa where strikes and protests took place for weeks. riots began in the city. Nicholas had ordered the city to be back in control and moved the army in firing on crowds and killing over 1000 civilians
  • they had to flee the city and had to sail to the black sea to avoid capture
  • On 8th July 1905 they made it to romania and were given asylum. they also sank the ship so russia could not take it
