  • This red light seems hotter than the other colors. I wonder why.
  • This red light seems hotter than the other colors. I wonder why.
  • William Herschel noticed that red light felt warmer than other colors of light.
  • Using a prism, Herschel spread the light into the different colors.
  • Using a thermometer, he measured the temperature of the different colors.
  • Infrared
  • He found it got hotter towards the red end of the spectrum.
  • He moved the thermometer just outside the red light and, to his surprise, he found the temperature on the thermometer increased even more.
  • He concluded that there must be some invisible radiation that we can't see.
