  • The particles can vibrate about a fixed point, but can't move around.
  • PROPERTIES: Solids can't flow.  REASON FOR PROPERTIES: The particles can't move past each other. 
  • Properties: Solids can't be compressed.  Reason for Properties: The particles are very close and can't move any closer.
  • Liquid
  • Close together and in a random way. Particles can move around each other.
  • PROPERTIES: Liquids can flow and take the shape of their container (at the bottom). REASON FOR PROPERTIES: The particles can move around one another. 
  • PROPERTIES: Liquids can't be compressed REASON FOR PROPERTIES: The particles are very close together and can't move any closer.
  • Gas
  • Far apart and arranged in a random way. Particles move very quickly around and sometimes collide with each other.
  • PROPERTIES: Gases can flow and completely fill their container. REASON FOR PROPERTIES: Particles move in every direction quickly.
  • PROPERTIES: Gases can be compressed. REASON FOR PROPERTIES: Particles are far apart so they can move closer together.
