Storyboard Text

  • We want to join the Union as a Free state!!
  • We need a better Fugitive Slave Law!
  • Cal will upset our balance!
  • Abolish Slavery in D.C.!
  • *Grumble* *Debate* *Yelling* *Arguing*
  • How about we do this... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • In December of 1849, Zachary Taylor asked Congress to accept California as a free state.
  • Sounds decent. Let's do it! *Goes back to arguing* Sounds Decent. Let's do it! *Goes back to arguing*
  • What if we did the bill in smaller bills to pass them easier? What if we split up the bill and voted on each part separately?
  • Unfortunately, Congress was in no position to admit California due to several over controversies over the issues of slavery. Some are the question of Slavery in D.C. and the North ignoring the Fugitive Slave Clause.
  • Protect black people!! We hate the Fugitive Slave Act!
  • You are legally required to come with me.
  • Henry Clay proposed a solution involving Cal entering as a free state, territorial governments in the Mexican land, abolition of the slave trade in D.C., and a better fugitive slave law.
  • If the North refuses to do what the law tells them, we may need to secede from the Union...
  • 7 Months passed and Congress was still deadlocked. Stephen Douglas proposed breaking he bill into smaller parts to be debated over. In the end, Congress passed all of the original bill.
  • 7 MONTHS LATER...
  • The North disliked the Fugitive Slave Act, and often prevented the deportation of  fugitive slaves. Some states even created their own laws to bar the Act from being enforced.
  • The South was alarmed by the North's defiance and further felt alienated from the Union. Some of the moderate politicians even considered secession as a viable option.
  • North against Fugitive Slave Act Extra! Extra!
