- Percy wakes up at Camp Half-Blood and finds out that Mr.Brunner is actually a centaur named Chiron and his best friend, Grover, is a satyr! Chiron tells Percy that he is a demigod which means that although his mom is mortal, his father is a God.
- On top of that, he is also introduced to the activity director Mr.D, who is the god Dionysus, and Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena.

- During a game of Capture the Flag, Percy is claimed as a son of Poseidon, god of the sea.

- Now Percy, Annabeth, and Grover must embark on a quest, from NY to LA, to get the bolt from Hades and return it to Zeus.
- Percy is being blamed for stealing Zeus' lightning bolt, but he didn't do it. Chiron suspects that Hades is to blame for this.

- The trio has to face some of the most fearsome and well-known monsters, such as Medusa, the Chimera, the Furies, and Procrustes.

- The demigods finally reach the underworld and face Hades, but discover that he never had the lightning bolt. At some point in the quest, it ended up in Percy's bag. But if neither Hades or Percy stole the bolt, then who did?
