  • Langston Hughes was born on February 1, 1902 in Joplin Missouri.  He lived with his grandma in the years of segregation and was treated unfairly.
  • The Harlem Renaissance
  • Langston went to school.  This affected his writing because he got elected class poet.  This made him want to write more .  He was also the 1st black person to graduate from his high school.
  • His Work
  • Langston Hughes poems, plays and stories-famous
  • Cool!!
  • He wrote his first poem on a train at the age of 19.  It was called, "The Negro Speaks of Rivers."  It was about rivers and black history.  This was the starting point to his life as a writer.
  • Death and Legacy
  • Langston was a primary contributor to the Renaissance.  With poetry, prose, plays, and artwork, they celebrated the African American experience.
  • He continued to write poems and started writing plays and short stories as well.  They were written for working black men. They were a success for who they were meant for.
  • New Newspaper
  • He died on May 27, 1967 from cancer.  His ashes were buried beneath the Center For Research in Black Culture in Harlem.  He is now considered one of the finest poets of the 20th century.
