Early in Edison's life he had an early session with scarlet fever as well as ear infections. This left him with hearing difficulties in both ears, a disease that would eventually leave him nearly deaf as an adult.
Edison couldn't speak until he was 4 years old.
Eventually, the innovation of the invention wore off for the public, and Edison did no further work on the phonograph for a while, concentrating instead on inventing the incandescent light bulb.
Let's leave the phonograph and go work on the incandescent light bulb!
