The Fort Sumter and Charleston harbor and the battle took place in south Carolina. Because of the union would not recapture Fort Sumter for nearly four years. And the election of Abraham Lincoln on November ,1860 brought to a head the issue of slavery in the united states.

Lincoln administration soght not to provoke armed conflict but refused to surrender federallinstations to the confederates. At 2:30PM on Apirl 13th major Robert Anderson, garrison commander, surrendered the fort and was evacuated the next day.
