At the beginning of the story, Gerald was forsaken by his abusive and neglective mother. Gerald at this duration was 3 yrs. old and had unintentionally caused a fire. His response to this situation was to hide behind the couch and hope to be saved and guided by a mature individual.
After Gerald's loving and caring Aunt Queen suffered the moral impact of a heart-attack, his affectionate and happy surroundings were deprived of his life.
As Gerald started to mature, he became intolerant of his step father's abuse, particularly the physical and sexual manipulation of his sister. He began sacrificing himself to the "devil", with the intentions of protecting his sorrowful and scared sister. Gerald was brave and responsive to his step father's abuse.
Gerald met Mr.Washington ( Gerald's best friend's dad ) when he arrived early at school. Mr.Washington noticed Gerald's despair and sorrowful symptoms. Furthermore, Mr.Washington approached Gerald with concern and volunteered to discuss his worries with him. In doing so, Mr.Washington helped Gerald benefit in many ways.
After the loss of Gerald's best friend, Robbie, it was difficult for him to cope with the supplemented chain dragging him down.
In the last event that occurred in this novel, Gerald was able to overcome his stress and disadvantages to guide Angel and himself to safety.
