Storyboard Text
- Algernon and Lane discuss their views on marriage. Lane exits. Lane reappears announcing the arrival of Ernest Worthing.
- Algernon questions Ernest after revealing that he found his cigarette case. Ernest reveals that he is "Ernest in town and Jack in the country" (8). Jack tells Algernon that he is the guardian of Cecily Cardew.
- Algernon discloses that he has a pretend friend named Bunbury that he uses the same way Jack uses Ernest. It is also revealed that Jack is in love with Algernon's cousin Gwendolen. Lane enters announcing the arrival of Lady Bracknell and her daughter Gwendolen.
- Algernon uses Bunbury as an excuse to not have dinner with his aunt. Algernon takes Lady Bracknell to another room so Jack can propose to Gwendolen. He asks her if she would still love him if his name wasn't Ernest. She dismisses this as she believes it is irrelevant.
- "Ernest" proposes to Gwendolen. Lady Bracknell comes in and sends Gwendolen to the carriage.
- After learning about her daughter's engagement, Lady Bracknell questions "Ernest" about his origins. She does not approve of his answers.
