As a punishment from the king, Minos, Daedalus and his son were kept prisoner on an island in Crete.
Daedalus was a remarkable inventor and craftsman. He made a simple workshop in the tower. He was saddened though, that his son only had seagulls for company.
Oh Icarus, how I wish to show you the world beyond this prison!
One day as Daedalus was watching the gulls circling above the water, he had an inspiration.
Icarus was gathering shells on the lonely beach, when his father shouted down to him...
Minos may rule the sea, but he does not rule the air!
Daedalus observed how the gulls' wings were shaped, and how they worked. No mortal had ever figured out how to fly, but now Daedalus was determined to do so.
