Ok mommy! Mommy, there is a new message that was just received.
David, only five more minutes. Then you need to give my phone back.
Let me see it . Oh it's saying ,I am getting a tax refund and need to click the link below to deposit it directly into my account. Hmm …
Seems like a scam message . The CRA never contacts you via text message on your personal phone. They send official emails or call you directly

I am going to log into my CRA account to see if there is any mail regarding the refund.
There are no mails or notifications. My tax file is still in the reviewing stage.
See, I told you . Nowadays, there are lots of scam texts, mails and fake calls about tax. We need to be careful, especially when we are handling our personal information.
Libisema: 3
I am so scared. How can these people act without any ethics or concerns for others?
It is true. If I click that link ,they can break into my private files and access my bank accounts. Then, they could steal money or use my personal information like SIN or Bank card number for identity theft..
Libisema: 4
If mommy clicks that link, she might lose a lot of money and personal information. It would then take a very long time for our lives to get back to normal.
Importantly, they ignore their own ethics and moral values. They forget to think about ethics the basic understanding of what is morally good or bad and right or wrong.(Singer,n.d).
They know about people's psychology. They send messages that make people feel rushed or scared to get their personal information.
Libisema: 5
Ohh … Luckily mommy didn't react right away .She analyzed the situation and avoided a scam. But why do these people do this to us? They don't seem to care that what they are doing is wrong or that it will have a huge impact on our life.
Yes… they don't think that way or maybe Moreover if mommy clicks that link, mommy’s private identity may be gone or may be used by bad people without her concern.
Libisema: 6
For example, I didn't give my phone number to them, but they got it from somewhere without my permission. Seems like I’m not alone in this, many people are targeted by these messages every day.
Why is that? Is it because they don't have anyone to teach them the differences between right and wrong or good or bad?
Libisema: 7
There are many factors involved. Sometimes they don’t understand ethics because they grew up in a different country or environment. We also have to wonder who thought them ethics and at what point they learned them. (Enriquez, 2018 ,15:44).
Most of the time unethical people choose illegal ways to do things.
Libisema: 8
It isn’t only scammers we have to worry about. Technology has made privacy a major concern. For example Google Maps and NASA collect data for good reasons, but they often do without getting people’s permission first.(Masnick,2012).
Libisema: 9
Just like other parents track their kids with their phone, you and mommy track my cellphone for my protection.(Luckerson,2012).
Yes . We do this because we are concerned about your safety. However, according to the 2018-19 Survey of Canadians on Privacy by The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada said,” Majority (92/:) expressed some level of concern about the protection of their privacy”.(OPC, 2019).
Libisema: 10
Also, according to the CIRA Facebook 2019 ,many people are worried about their privacy because they feel their phones are listening to them, tracking their movements and recording them wherever they go.(CIRA, n. d).
Whether we like it or not, modern technology takes our privacy away slowly. Like Sprenger(1999) said ,” You have zero privacy. Get over it.”
Libisema: 11
Good job David , it is a good start.
Technology is essential to the modern world, we must understand and promote the ethics of it. We need to raise awareness about how to protect our privacy and keep our personal lives safe.
Yes .. I have also begun sharing these insights with my classmates. By doing so, I can help them and their parents understand how to avoid scams and protect their privacy.
