  • This is Amelia. Amelia is a 5th grade student who has Dyslexia. Amelia is very creative and curious, but she struggles with reading and writing due to her dyslexia. She loves science because she gets to lean into her curiosity for how things work, but she becomes anxious when she has to write lab reports or read long science passages.
  • Miss Baughman, Amelia's 5th grade science teacher, introduces the Solar System Project, where students will research a planet, design a model, and do a presentation.
  • Amelia is really excited about this project, but she worries about all of the reading and writing that will be required for the project.

  • She suggests that Amelia uses a 3D modeling software and clay to design her planet rather than using written descriptions, which is related to Amelia's visual-spatial thinking strengths.
  • Miss Baughman makes suggestions that she thinks will help Amelia be successful with the project.
  • She suggests that Amelia listens to audiobooks about her planet and looks at graphic organizers as opposed to reading books and research.
  • She suggests the Amelia creates a brochure about her planet, which allows her to incorporate art and focus on presenting facts in simple language.

  • Amelia's final project and presentation are a huge success! Her classmates are engaged in her presentation, and Amelia answers their questions with ease due to her understanding from all of her research and strategies.
  • Amelia ends this chapter with confidence in her ability to utilize her many strengths and not be set back in the classroom because of her Dyslexia.
