- She's adorable but you can't keep a raccoon Travis. Father would be furious
- Isn't she cute? I think I'll call her Bandit!
- Calpurnia (Callie) is a 12 year old girl who lives in rural Texas in 1900 text who is a part of 7 siblings; 6 of them being brothers. Callie has an interest in science despite that not really being something that’s accepted as something woman can do in the time period. Callie’s younger brother Travis is known for bringing in strays: with him bringing in an armadillo and raccoon home.

- Exposition
- No naming it, no taking it to the doctor, no bringing it home. After Bandit, we agreed: no more wild animals.
- When Callie and Travis went outside, they found a coyote dog; half dog, half coyote. Travis named it Scruffy even though Callie told him not to get attached to it.

- Rising Action
- Scruffy here boy
- Good doggy
- Travis and Callie keep on feeding Scruffy and taking care of it. They even house it in Bandit’s old den for a bit to help it get back on it’s feet.

- what did I do, what did I do!
- Don't look at the blood. Get the wheelbarrow and hurry Travis.

- When the family is thinking about getting a new dog, Travis and Callie try to show them Scruffy. When they try to show him, their family cook, Viola, mistakes Scruffy for a coyote and shoots it.

- Falling Action
- Calpurnia, can you get me some rags to contain the bleeding?

- EEK! BLOOD!
- Callie and Travis rush over to Dr. Pritzker and Callie and Dr. Pritzker try to help Scruffy. One of his legs ended up being weak and he had to learn how to walk well on it again. Callie and Travis are still trying to introduce Scruffy to the family.

- Good boy Scruffy!
- ARF ARF!
- When their dad sees Scruffy hunt and place a rat in the loading dock at his cotton gin, he finally accepts Scruffy as a part of the family. He allows him to officially live at the house and not outside of it.

- Is he going to be okay!?
- I'm going to name him Scruffy.
- But he's not really wild, he's only half wild. The other half is tame.
